Meatless Mondays for the Earth
A few weeks ago I reached out to the Decor It Yourself Facebook page asking who would be down to join me in pledging to do this. I eat meat WAY less than 6 days a week, but I wanted to see if we could motivate a whole group to make a committed pledge. I was seriously stoked to see the response, so decided to make Meatless Mondays our Earth Day episode, since how we eat is one of the most powerful impacts we have on our planet. Here is the episode:
When you make the pledge, you can sign up for the Meatless Mondays news letter that brings delicious veggie recipes to your e-mail in-box each week. How easy could this get?
Some foodie friends helped by blogging about the subject and including some of their favorite vegetarian meals for us. Matthias and his fiance` have a food blog, Milk in Glass Bottles and contributed A Vegetable Matter. My friend and vegetarian, Daisy, contributed a , meatless Shepard's Pie recipe (and a fun way to learn it) over on her blog, Pushing Up Daisies. Rebecca Lando, from the delectable Working Class Foodies gave us her take on the issue and some fav dishes here. And lastly, here is my round-up of vegetarian recipes in my post from a few weeks ago.
Treehugger reports here that if we stop eating meat one day a week, this is the positive effect it will have on our environment....
*Our greenhouse gas emission reductions equal US switching from a car with average fuel efficiency (that's about 22 mpg for the entire fleet) to a high efficiency car such as the Toyota Prius (50 mpg).
* We will save about 1 ton of water, enough to fill up the bathtub 22 times per week.
* If everyone in the US did this, we'd collectively save about 12 billion gallons of gasoline.
This is a small life change that will make huge changes for the planet.

1970's String Art

I love diving into different design decades, and in this episode of Decor It Yourself, we are inspired by 1970's string art.
Here is the episode....
In the episode I made this poppy red orb and the blue and mustard stars to start.
I chose a simple design for my first piece, and hope to expand to more complicated designs like this one from Apartment Therapy's post on art over the mantle.
Or this perfectly kitch sunset couple silhouette piece I saw on ebay.
DIY Lighting Part 2

Following Lighting Part 1 I visited with Louise, of the Etsy shop Warpe Designs. In Lighting Part 2, Louise shows us how to make a paper lantern of the New York City skyline.

Meatless Mondays
Whether you have recently watched Food Inc., read one of Michael Pollan's informative books, or have just been hearing the information about what is in our meat these days, you may be wanting to make a change. On the Decor It Yourself Facebook page yesterday, I pledged to start each week with a Meatless Monday.
My husband is a vegetarian, to him and to all vegetarian and vegans out there- BRAVO! This whole post and pledge is dedicated to you for making responsible, healthy, and above all, kind choices every single day. Thank you.
For the rest of us, this is a way for us to make a difference. I wanted to officially pledge to (at least) cut out meat one day a week with this awesome initiative and see who would join me. I was thrilled to see so many of you are! Please share your stories, recipes, and journey with our Nest readers and Decor It Yourself viewers by commenting here. We can really help each other out with this.
If we cut out meat just ONE day a week, it will reduce our consumption by 15%. Reducing the amount of meat we eat doesn't just save a lot of animals, but it cuts down on a tremendous amount of energy it takes to ship the meat. Cutting down on our meat consumption opens up a lot of grass to have free-range farms instead of factories that manipulate the animals we eat, and feed them hormones and anti-biotics in order to survive in their unhealthy conditions. This movement will also provide a day to recognize that we have a choice in what we put in our body, and can change our body's and planet's health by making the right choices.
Here are lists of delicious vegetarian recipes from a few key websites to help you go Meatless on Mondays. Each link is that site's list of vegetarian recipes.:
The Meatless Mondays website offers weekly up-dates on this list of recipes to help you keep your pledge.

What are your favorites? Send them in, add some photos or video, and they could be featured on the blog or on Decor It Yourself! Best of luck with Meatless Mondays!

DIY Lighting Week

Lighting is the back-bone of your home's aesthetic.
If you want to make ONE change to up-grade the look and feel of a space, I say invest in your lighting. There are so many cool ideas out there for us to tackle, I had to make 2 episodes dedicated to DIY lighting.
The first installment aired yesterday, where I made a Structured Blossom lamp, as seen on Design Sponge, here.

I added the element of color in the red lamp, and in my shades I used twice the felt I anticipated because I loved the really dense look. Spin it how ever you want, and share the result by sending me photos to meg@threadbanger.com

Check the Decor It Yourself Fanpage to see iconic lighting fixtures through the decades. Familiarize yourself with choice pieces you may want to collect over the years. This will help you score a sweet deal when you stumble across one.
See you next week with Part 2 of DIY Lighting!

DIY Warhol Quote Wall Art

The above print and the post card below have hung in every bedroom of mine since age twelve. We all have artists who we adore, who inspire us, whose work has enriched our lives by speaking directly to us. As I said in a previous post, one of those artists for me is Andy Warhol, whom I've adored since the sixth grade when my weekly planner was filled with his work. Not aware at the time of what an icon he was, I thought he was my on personal discovery. Kinda like in elementary school when I thought the Pixies BELONGED to only me.
Not only does his artwork move me, but the things that came out of his mouth are absolutely priceless. I did a whole line of Enderby tote bags hand stamped with this quote a few years ago:
Wanting to bring his work into my home, I was inspired by an Apartment Therapy post on how I could do just that. So this week's episode of Decor It Yourself was Warhol Quote Wall Art.

I created the piece on a door we needed to re-paint anyway. The door is in between our creative space and bedroom, so we get to enjoy it from both rooms. I love how it turned out, and love that you can create the same effect as a gift on a smaller piece of wood. An easy technique and great end result. How will you spin this project?
DIY Shadowbox

My husband and I went on a vacation for a week in January to the lovely Siesta Key, Florida with my in-laws who have a home there. It was a great escape, especially in between the snowy days that New York had to offer.

We saw all kind of wild life and gorgeous sunsets, we sat on the beach, read by the pool, relaxed, and had a great time.

Upon our return, I wanted a cool way to commemorate the trip AND a gift to thank my in-laws. So, I decided to do something Martha would do and make a shadow box of our trip for the Coles. of course I made an episode out of it that you can see right HERE!

The shadowbox of the trip is a gift, so I bought a nice frame to use and added shells, coral and a map.

To add a modern aesthetic to the concept, I did a more DIY shadowbox with a vintage wooden coffee box, and my designer chair collection. We get to keep this one. The options are endless, so tune in to the second act to get plenty of ideas you can put your spin on.

If you can't get away this winter, never fear, I show you how to turn a little part of your home into your favorite vacation escape. our restroom has a beach feel to it, and on a day like today with a massive snowstorm afoot, it is nice to take a hot shower surrounded by sea shells, coral, seagulls and beach finds.

DIY Silhouette Pillow

I always miss my Nana. When I have a big surge of missage or just can't get her out of my mind, I try to make something out of her old fabric. For a Decor It Yourself episode a couple of weeks ago, I made a Nana silhouette pillow.
You can see the full episode here.

DIY Glass Etching & Beer Brewing
For the latest installment of Decor It Yourself I indulge my addiction to dishware and learn how to etch glass. In the accompanying blog post, I provide these simple designs to use as templates for your etching if you want.
You can also download any font you like and do initials for a customized glass. The second half is a cool tutorial for how to brew your own beer by Erin Bried, author of How to Sew on a Button and Other Nifty Things Your Grandma Knew". Click here to watch, and enjoy!
DIY Hedgehog Plushie

My sister is having the very first grand baby in the family in March, and I wanted to make something special for the little guy for her up-coming shower. So in the last episode of Decor It Yourself I began my nephew on his own collection of animal friends. Learn how to make a hedgehog and see a round up of some of the coolest plushies out there by watching THIS EPISODE!
