Gyula Halász, known as Brassai, was a Hungarian-born French photographer who so beautifully and intimately captured the romance and the underbelly of Paris at night.
I've had this postcard of the couple in a cafe` and one of Matisse from his series of artists since junior high school. They have been framed, taped, or tacked onto the wall of every home I've had since then.
Never being able to choose just one to buy or frame, Will and I looked through one of the lesser-quality books I have of Brassai's work putting Post-Its on favorite pieces. We put together this series and hung it in our bedroom.
Originally with the intent of framing each one, we ended up liking the simplicity of a photograph and a push pin against the warm, rich green.
“Bijou” in Place Pigalle Bar, photograph by Brassaï, 1932. I don't have a copy of this yet, but I love this one. This woman has lived a lot of life.

Saddle Up

The above pair of kicks are my all-time favorite. I found them in a vintage shop in Baltimore, Maryland, circa 1996. I have cherished every step I've taken in them ever since. Authentic Italian leather Oxford's from the 40's, they are classic and timeless. They are getting a bit worn, and now I am in search of a great pair of Saddle Shoes to absorb some of the wear.
Saddle shoes are a classic staple from your mom's wardrobe in the 50's-60's, although they came about in the early 1900's. Although they give me flashbacks to being forced into frilly dresses on Sundays as a tyke, the retro wardrobe piece remains a major crush of mine to this day. I'm searching for the perfect vintage pair. Til then, I can follow the super-easy DIY instructions of how to make my own in Morgan Hungerford's rad Style Column in Brightest Young Things.
Be sure to check this column and Morgan's D.C. Street Style blog PandaHead. The DIY fashion articles are totally tight, way do-able, and even if you're not going to follow-through with the project of the week, it's nice to know you could if you wanted to.

Fall Photo Series

Fall photo series of my parents, circa 1975.
Hanging in Enderby part of our "art studio". Home to all of our projects.
Grey is the new Black

Anthropologie rocks my socks with this grey dress. It is adorable for Fall.
Mountain Mural

This is what I did this weekend.
A four part mural inspired by the fantastic 1970's stretched canvas pieces that I love so much. In our Handstand Records and Enderby studio, there is a huge part of the wall that is made up of the 3 white doors to our closet space.
The room is painted a vibrant Robin's Egg blue, and the closet doors are white. With four colors, carefully chosen, I divided the panels into 5 horizonatal sections, and then hand-drew the mountain range on in a light pencil. Painting from the top to the bottom, this easy project was complete in one afternoon/evening.
To finish it off, I switched the standard, kinda tattered chrome door knob, with a new one I found on sale at Anthropologie. Super easy because I already had the door knob screwed off to complete the paint job.
Originally inspired by my favorite vintage tee shirt that has a similar image, I first realized that this was a DIY home decor project we could actually accomplish when seeing the below photograph in my new favorite book. This Better Homes and Gardens Decorating Book, published in 1975, is the most amazing publication.

A full step-by-step guide to any and every DIY home decor project. 400 pages filled with incredible design, endless inspiration, and the most wonderful collection of 1960's-70's space-age decor and ideas. Fan-freakin-tastic!

I found this rad find in my fav Etsy shop, run by my fav girl.
Sidedish has become a staple in Nest, and provides me with endless inspiration and a plethora of perfect pieces.

Behold

Paula Aspen created a lovely and unique series of photographs, Just Like Home.
I stumbled across Aspen's series while taking a gander at The Beholder. A fantastic place to find a wide variety of mediums, genres and aesthetics, The Beholder is an artist's utopia, made accessible and easy.
I am drawn to Patryce Bak's work, as her photographs are so intimate I feel as though I am quietly walking into someone's home.

Bread + Onions

The Robert Van Allen mid-seventies stretched-canvas piece looks perfect in the kitchen above the mod vintage glass bread dish. The Onions were found in Mamadelic's Etsy shop, and the bread dish at a fantastic thrift store not too far from our buddy Christina's place. My girl Alison of Appleseeds + Sidedish helped me with this pairing.
Autumnal + Klutze-Proof Dishware
"10 inch heavy-duty Melamine plates manufactured by the same company that makes them for the US military."
French Paper have this great Fawn-Due set of plates with scenes of an autumnal forest with fawns, does and bucks in their natural habitat. A rad addition to anyone's table, and remarkably practical in their ability to withstand any Calamity Jane. When the US Military counts on this durable material for dishware, it seems Melamine might just be the answer for klutzes like me.
And even better, French Paper carries the fantastically 70's Faux Bois Plates. I must collect the set.
